deCordova Live: Paul Matisse and Pick Up Music Project
For the 40th anniversary of the Musical Fence, join sculptor Paul Matisse and Daniel Joseph (DJ), Director of The Pickup Music Project (PuMP), for a public conversation. The two sound sculptors will discuss the origins of Paul's first Musical Fence (which now resides at deCordova), its connection to other sculptures from Paul's 50+ years of making art, and the way that Paul's work and friendship influenced DJ to found PuMP. Their dialogue will show viewers how Greater Boston's most prolific sound sculptor (Paul, age 87), has "passed the baton" to PuMP (average age 28), the local team of artists continuing to activate Boston's public spaces through sound.

Paul and DJ may also discuss the influence of Paul's social circle on his artistic practice, including friendships and familial relationships with artists such as Henri Matisse, Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, and John Cage.
